Sorting and Grouping are one of the basic Math skill. Kids can start the sorting activity when they are around 19 months. Sorting and grouping can be practiced with any type of item.
We should define some features or attributes or characteristic based on which items has to be grouped. This kind of classifying and grouping activity helps the kid to develop the thinking skill and later problem solving techniques. Their ideas and logical thinks are developed which in turn help to build a good Cohesive Skills.
After shopping before it goes to the fridge i ask my kid to sort all the vegetables and fruits based on the colour or similarities. Even I ask him to sort the laundry, job done for us!!!!
Now lets see some Kids Activities related to Sorting and Grouping.
- These are some building blocks which we can find at all our home. here blocks are grouped based on colours.
- In this set of blocks they are grouped based on shapes.
- For little older kids it we add more rules like, theses are some small fruits erasers. You can ask the kid to group same fruits together and put them in the cups based of the size. Like fruit with more numbers will go to the bigger cup, and fruits with less number goes to the smaller cup. Here we are incorporating the descending order of numbers.
- Later ask them to count and write the number of fruits in each variety. Incorporating counting activity.
We don’t need any fancy toys to make learning interesting. We can take what’s available at our end and use it effectively.
Happy Learning 🙂
